Nirvana Karkat x Reader (ch. 5)

Thank you for all who participated in the ch. 4 interaction!

===> Agree to his terms

You open your mouth to speak, but no words come out.  Your throat clenches when you think what the meaning behind this lecture could be and struggle to form a reasonable, oh please even only a coherent, response.  Karkat is braced for retaliation as he awaits your reply with a growing irritation.  When your voice does not come through for you, you nod instead.

Karkat exhales but does not yet seem to relax.  He is still justifiably braced for reprisal, but it does not come.  His eyes scan your face for a moment, questioning your resignation.

"Okay?" He asks for confirmation.

"Okay." You rasp.

You notice his face lightening to a healthier grey before realizing he was recovering from a flush.  Ah, is he nervous? Of course, you can see why he would be. You're still recovering yourself; this exchange seems to grow more embarrassing by the moment.  Karkat turns from you to lay on his stomach once again, keeping his safe distance.

"G-good. Gah, I'm sorry. I made that discussion beyond awful." He conceals his face in his hands. You begin to organize a response that wouldn't irritate him, but cease your train of thought when he mutters to himself once more:

"That could have gone so smoothly, fuck. I can't believe I flew off the handle like that. Whatever, okay," he lifts his head up again, "you just made a deal with me, understand?  No going back on your word.  You got that?"

"Mm."

"I'll take that as a yes.  I've got a few rules that I want to lay out here before we begin with this thing."

"Wait- we're starting now??"

"Hush." He puts his finger to his lips and gives you a stern look before continuing.   "Alright. First rule:"  He lists with his fingers for emphasis, "when I'm talking, I don't want any interruptions." He throws a glare at you again and you begrudgingly perform a motion of zipping your lips shut and throwing away the key.  "Good.  Second:  when we're in these stupid sessions, I'm in charge; that means what I say goes."

'Oh gog', you think. You fight the urge to groan, lest you receive another foul-mouthed harangue.

"Third... actually, that's pretty much it.  If you follow those first two rules, there shouldn't be any problem.  You got that?"

Your face twists in recognition of the unpleasantries that are in store for you, however; you nod your head in agreement to his terms.

"Good."  He gets up and stands awkwardly, staring at his feet.

...

"...We're not starting now?"  You break the silence.

"No." He looks away.  "I'm going to give you time to collect your thoughts.  And, I guess, I don't really know what to say right now anyway.  Um... yeah. I guess I'll talk to you later then."

You stare after him as he leaves you alone in the room.  Great.  How are you going to know what to say when he returns?

--

Several weeks had passed since you promised Karkat you would confide in him.  You had several sessions with each other, each ranging from few to several hours.  At the end of each session, you would notice how little you had progressed, as you still had not shared with him much of what you were feeling or thinking.  Still, his company is comforting.  It doesn't take much from him to slake your neurotic tenancies, and his efforts do not go unappreciated.

Tonight your session focuses on "relieving tension through the enjoyment of aesthetically pleasing and well written dramas".  You are going to watch a romantic comedy together.

Karkat sits on his knees in front of the movie player, debating which movie of the two he picked would better appeal to your interests, and you wait patiently on the couch.  You notice him place the movies on his lap, perhaps deciding to chose later and instead attempt configuring the settings on the display screen and player.

"...Have you decided yet?"

"Fuck off, it's a process."

You sigh.  The room is silent save for the clicking of buttons on the player and the proceeding shuffling of movie cases.  After some time, Karkat stands with one movie in hand.  He gives it a thoughtful look with furrowed brows, as if maybe reconsidering, but concedes as he slides the disk into the player and joins you close on the couch with an ungraceful plop.

"Okay.  You'll like this movie.  Troll Katherine Heigl's acting is gold."

"Great.  I can't wait."

Karkat sneaks a glare at you from the corner of his eyes.  "Tired of your bullshit, {f/n}.  Just watch the damn movie."  He grabs the remote and skips through the previews.

You throw him a mischievous toothy smile and turn your attention to the TV.

"So this one actually has a plot?  Your last one didn't, and the actors sucked. It was pretty horrible all around, really."  His eyes widen and he looks at you in mock horror.   Or maybe genuine horror, you don't really know.

"Holy fuck!  What do you have against art, {f/n}?"

"I have nothing against art; I think art is lovely,"  you snicker.

"Oh, I see.  I see.  You just get your sick fucking twist out of tormenting me about the art *I* happen to enjoy and praise, oh-so-uncannily resembling the traits of a narcissistic head-up-their-nook bulgestain I can't stand.  Oh wait!  That's you.  Nevermind!  Funny enough, last time I checked, I was doing this for *your* benefit, not mine.  Like a fucking fantastic friend.  So EXCUSE me for trying to help out a friend in distress, my bad!  You ungrateful piece of shit."  You have fallen into an unstoppable fit of giggles at this point.  You hold your aching stomach.  "Wow, I am so glad you find humour in this astonishingly serious matter, {f/n}.  You're a fucking pal.  A real friend.  Goddamn buddy of the year here!  Dammit, stop laughing!"

"Oh gog, you're so vile!"  In your convulsive laughter you are unable to repress a subtle snort from escaping your lips.  You cover your mouth in embarrassment.

Karkat's foul demeanor drops instantly, and he stares at you in fascination.  "What was that?  Did that sound just come from you?"  A hint of a smile tugs at your friend's lips.

You shake your head, pursing your lips to fight off that contagious smile.  "Nope."

"Ha!  It was!  That was,"  he pauses, racking his pan for a suitable word.  "Uh, endearing."

You can't help but react in surprise.  Of course, that was a very unexpected word choice.  Endearing, did he say?  No, you must have heard him wrong.  Maybe he made a mistake.  Karkat doesn't use words like endearing.

Karkat somewhat panics at your reaction.  "Wait, what did I say?  Fuck, no, ahh, gog I meant like rewarding or something?  I don't know, I'm doing my job and that's all that matters.  You're responding to my methods and I think that's good.  That's what I meant."  He looks away from you and to the TV.  "Whatever, don't bother responding to that.  The movie's starting."

You close your mouth and obey.  As the movie starts, you try hard to pay attention.  You honestly do try, but you can't seem to sustain a stable interest.  If you're being completely honest with yourself, you'd admit that this movie does seem genuinely interesting (as opposed to Karkat's last choice), but for the first time you're too conscious of Karkat's presence next to you.  And you don't know why.  This bothers you.

Halfway through the movie, Karkat's whimpers startle you out of your thoughts.  You look over to your friend and watch as his eyes (which are utterly glued to the screen) begin to shed translucent red tears.

'Oh,' you think.  'I guess it's a sad part.'  You devote your attention to this segment of the movie, knowing full well Karkat will expect a discussion over this particular scene after the denouement.

Just as you immerse in the exaggerated dialogue, the screen flickers to black and shuts off.  The lights in the room go out.  You and Karkat are left in silent darkness.

Just as promptly, the perpetual tremor of the meteor comes to a halt.

Your breathe hitches in your throat.

This has never happened before.

After several long moments of bewildered silence and labored breath in the darkness, you feel Karkat's gaze sear into you.

You turn, squinting your eyes to see his face only to discover his black silhouette.

"{f/n}... The meteor's stopped," he whispers.
Ahhhhhhhh it's so late I'm so sorry for that ;A; Gah so short. I'll try to make it longer next time guys ;3;
((I didn't really review this, so if it's kind of choppy please bear with me for the moment!))
